Have you every wondered if the reading program your child's school is using is a great program? Especially if your child has dyslexia you want to make sure that the reading program used at your school is awesome. What components should an awesome reading program have?
- A strong phonics components
- Using this phonics knowledge to learn to spell
- Learning sight words
- Oral and silent reading
- Practicing reading fluency
- Writing, since reading and writing go hand and hand
- Reading comprehension strategies
How do you find out if your child has these components in their reading program? To start with, you can volunteer in the classroom so you can see what they do during reading time. You can also ask your child's teacher about each of the above mentioned areas. Any teacher would be awe-struck if a parent brought this up in a Parent Teacher Conference. They would know that you were very serious about helping your struggling reader become a better reader.
Also, in my next several posts I'll explain more of what to look for in each of these areas, what awesome looks like.
